Multipart transferTo looks for a wrong file address when using createTempFile

I have the following java code in Spring framework to convert a multipart file to a regular file:

    public static File convertToFile(MultipartFile multipart) {
        File convFile = null;
        try {
            convFile = File.createTempFile(multipart.getOriginalFilename(), "");
            multipart.transferTo(convFile);
        } catch (IllegalStateException | IOException e) {
        }
        return convFile;
    }

I can see the file when I check the place where this temporary file is created, but the file size is 0, there is no content for it.

Why does this happen? what should I do?

Update 1

It throws FileNotFoundException when executing transferTo, but the address that it refers to seems to be wrong: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /tmp/tmp/filename.png82482347 (No such file or directory)

While The address for convFile is /tmp/filename.png82482347 and the original file name for multipart file is filename.png82482347

I confirm that the multipart file size is larger than 0 which means it's not empty.

As you can see it's looking for the file under `/tmp/tmp` which is not correct.

I changed the arguments passed to `createTempFile` to ("expensePhoto", "") and now I get the following exception:

I figured out what I was doing wrong.

I was trying to convert MultipartFile to File outside of the service layer (in another component). Now I do this conversion inside the service layer (but in a separate class) and it's working fine.

So the code looks like this: StandardMultipartHttpServletRequest

public void transferTo(File dest) throws IOException, IllegalStateException {
  this.part.write(dest.getPath());
}

and MultiPartInputStreamParser:

    /**

     */
    public void write(String fileName) throws IOException
    {
        if (_file == null)
        {
            _temporary = false;

            //part data is only in the ByteArrayOutputStream and never been written to disk
            _file = new File (_tmpDir, fileName);

So in the case that the file isn't on disk, we will end up with /tmp twice.

I think this is a bug in StandardMultipartHttpServletRequest -- it is passing a path to something which expects a filename.

I changed it to a static string "hello" and I still get the same error, which means it's still looking under /tmp/tmp rather than /tmp – Everhart
I'm sure you don't get "the same error" -- the filename will be different. Please update your question with the new code and error message. – Mononuclear

You could check the issue trackers for Spring and Jetty, and make sure that you are using the latest versions. You could also try making confFile just new File(multipart.getOriginalFileName()). – Mononuclear
Eventually I upload this file to S3. Therefore I don't need to keep that file around, which means putting it under temp is better suited for this case than a permanent file created with new File(...). But it could be a good work-around for now. – Everhart
But you mentioned that "in the case the file is not on disk.." the convFile is on disk, it's in /tmp/, so why should this happen? – Everhart

I solved the same issue by adding apache Commons FileUpload component. Hope it helps for you.

  1. add pom dependency
