Is there a set of constants in the framework for all the standard content types?

Stepha answered 28/4, 2012 at 9:9 Comment(3)
Yes (for common types) - see Jon's answer. Look at System.Net.Mime.MediaTypes.Tussore
Just a small correction in what Gary has mentioned. It is System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNamesVersed

Taking it as a resounding no, I wrote my own. That's what Sundays were made for.

Update

Stumbled upon this great resource today.

Update 22-03-2020 As Jon and James White mentioned on comments, you can check:

System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames
Stepha answered 29/4, 2012 at 15:25 Comment(10)
This list seems a little out of date, there is no application/xml. You can find quite a large list on Wikipedia at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_media_typeSteamroller
For the common types, there's no need to roll your own. See Jon's answer.Tussore
@GaryMcGill Gary, you've down-voted this answer but I don't accept that Jon's answer really covers the common types. JSON isn't even in there. Seriously dude.Stepha
@LukePuplett Yes, I commented and down voted on the basis of Jon's answer, which seemed much more the right way to do it, yet was buried under yours. I then tried using Jon's suggested method only to find that - as you say - it only covers a small subset of types. So I then modified my comments to that effect. I can't change my down vote to an up vote for two days due to SO rules, but will do when I can. Though I may down vote you again for calling me dude :-)Tussore
The funny thing about that down vote was that Gary shot from the hip, and before actually understanding the problem and this solution. There are a lot of those types lurking around SO.Aboveground
To be honest, he came back and was honest and showed humility (and humour), which SO could use more of.Stepha
I know you are not supposed to say "thanks", but hell, MS will never learn how to do things right. Here is how some libraries that do it in a proper way: github.com/spray/spray/blob/master/spray-http/src/main/scala/…Megaton
You had forgotten to add bmp type.Zollie
PLEASE VOTE and ask Microsoft to finally implement this!Donner
minus 1 to encourage using the now built-in constants , sorry :'(Cleland

You could use:

For example, System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Image.Gif is equal to "image/gif".

Here is the complete list of default content type constants in .NET Framework base class library (BCL). You will have to add reference to System.Net.Http.dll in your project to use these constants.

  1. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Octet for application/octet-stream
  2. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Pdf for application/pdf
  3. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Rtf for application/rtf
  4. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Soap for application/soap+xml
  5. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Zip for application/zip
  6. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Image.Gif for image/gif
  7. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Image.Jpeg for image/jpeg
  8. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Image.Tiff for image/tiff
  9. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Text.Html for text/html
  10. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Text.Plain for text/plain
  11. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Text.RichText for text/richtext
  12. System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Text.Xml for text/xml

Update[12-Aug-2021]:

A new set of constants are now available in System.Net.Mime namespace. This namespace is part of System.Net.Mail.dll which is referenced by default whenever you create a new project targeting .NET v5. This DLL is part of .NET v5 (erstwhile .NET Core v5) release.

  1. MediaTypeNames.Application.Json
  2. MediaTypeNames.Application.Octet
  3. MediaTypeNames.Application.Pdf
  4. MediaTypeNames.Application.Rtf
  5. MediaTypeNames.Application.Soap
  6. MediaTypeNames.Application.Xml
  7. MediaTypeNames.Application.Zip
  8. MediaTypeNames.Image.Gif
  9. MediaTypeNames.Image.Jpeg
  10. MediaTypeNames.Image.Tiff
  11. MediaTypeNames.Text.Html
  12. MediaTypeNames.Text.Plain
  13. MediaTypeNames.Text.RichText
  14. MediaTypeNames.Text.Xml

Note: .NET v5 is not a new release of .NET Framework. Instead it is the next major release of .NET following .NET Core v3.1. .NET is new name of .NET Core. Core branding has been removed.

None for "application/json" yet :(Sift
@Sift now there's a MediaTypeNames.Application.Json. It seems that only for >=netstandard2.1 and >=netcoreapp2.1.Cabdriver

In the new ASP.NET Core MimeMapping can be used with the filename:

MimeMapping.GetMimeMapping("1.jpg")

Should return image/jpeg.

All the mappings can be found here and it is also possible to add your own (see e.g. this answer).

Laveen answered 6/1, 2016 at 11:5 Comment(3)
That's an interesting find. Shame it couples media types with file extensions. E.g. it wouldn't make sense to add application/x-www-form-urlencoded.Keyes
Are you sure this is still in the latest versions of .NET Core?Stound
I am currently using the MimeMapping NuGet package (nuget.org/packages/MimeMapping) which serves its purpose great!Stound

Please also check this amazing solution in below link (section "Using a static MIME Type Map"):

https://www.ryadel.com/en/get-file-content-mime-type-from-extension-asp-net-mvc-core/

You can simply use it like that:

var mineType= MimeTypeMap.GetMimeType(System.IO.Path.GetExtension(submitted));

https://www.nuget.org/packages/MimeTypesMap/ is a great NuGet package for this. Use it like this:

MimeTypesMap.GetMimeType("filename.jpeg"); // => image/jpeg

or the other way:

MimeTypesMap.GetExtension("image/jpeg"); // => jpeg
