I am using M1 Macbook Pro and wants to install therubyracer and libv8 for a rails webapp. But I am unable to do so because of the errors described below. There are several solutions available on the internet but none of them is working for me.

Operating System: macOS Big Sur v11.1.

It would be very helpful if someone can help me with this.

I'm exactly at the same point as you... (After the nightmare of installing Ruby, FFI, etc) ... In some post I read about someone trying theminiracer gem instead. If you are able to solve it please update your post xDLavatory
@Vaibhav Gupta Here you can found your solution to install therubyracer and libv8 in M1.Equilibrant

This works for me:

  • Ruby version: 2.6.1
  • OS version: macOS Big Sur 11.2
  1. Install HomeBrew using Rosetta Termina https://5balloons.info/correct-way-to-install-and-use-homebrew-on-m1-macs/

    brew install [email protected]
    gem install libv8 -v '3.16.14.19' -- --with-system-v8
gem install therubyracer -- --with-v8-dir=/usr/local/opt/[email protected]

Just a reminder, check if your v8 formula is in the correct directory. For me it was; gem install therubyracer -- --with-v8-dir=/usr/local/homebrew/opt/[email protected]Hanes

I fixed this by installing V8 on Rosseta 2 as V8 not yet supported for ARM.

You can try this

gem install therubyracer -v '0.12.3' -- --with-v8-dir=/usr/local/opt/[email protected]

Or install V8 on Rosseta 2.

Update: How to install ruby in x86_64 for M1.

  1. Install homebrew in x86_64. Please refer to this guide How to install ruby on m1
  2. Install ASDF using x86_64
  3. Install all other dependencies on x86_64 only such as postgres, redis, and V8 using x86_64 only.
Marrakech answered 14/2, 2021 at 7:43 Comment(7)
The this is that [email protected] cant be installed via Rosseta. Or at least there is no brew bottle for M1. If you compile it within x86_64, You would need a x86_64 version of Ruby, which also have problems with M1Lavatory
Yes, I had to install ruby within x86_64 for this.Marrakech
How do you install Ruby ? Did you use RVM? RBENV ? ASDF ? I'm having hard time installing Ruby within x86_64. Can you explain the process ?Lavatory
I have updated my answer. I am had to install everything on x86_64 to make sure, I can work without any error. I work on rails 4.2.8. I am using M1 for my daily drive and didn't want to take much risk.Marrakech
Thanks, I'll tryLavatory
I was having the same issue, this kinda solve my issue: gem install libv8 -v '3.16.14.19' -- --with-system-v8 gem install therubyracer -v '0.12.3' -- --with-v8-dir=/usr/local/Homebrew/opt/[email protected] Please see this link gist.github.com/fernandoaleman/… But now I am having a different issue when I rails s dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found:Splenius
Yes indeed mine is all fixed, indeed follow that link from the answer. I had to remove rbenv and homebrew and started all from scratch.Splenius
