I tried to create a replica set following instruction such as : https://hevodata.com/learn/mongodb-replica-set-3-easy-methods/

Sadly, I have a problem at the first step :

Problem

The command :

mongod --port 27017 --dbpath "C:\Program Files\MongoDB\Server\5.0\data" --replSet replicaSet1

I think the problem is with the sentence :

"NotYetInitialized: Cannot use non-local read concern until replica set is finished initializing"

Any ideas on what to do here? I am on windows 10.

I recommend not combining a config file and command line options. Either put all options in command line when you start mongod or put all in a config file. You run mongod without any --config (or -f) option, thus your mongod.cfg config file is not taken into consideration! You should enclose the path names by quotes.Taylor

same problem here, can't find a solutionAlberto

The blog post in the original question (3-easy-methods) is outdated. A better reference for deploying a replicaSet is the official docs: docs.mongodb.com/manual/tutorial/deploy-replica-setCubical

You need to initialize the replicaSet

$ mongo --port 27017
> rs.initiate()

Then to deploy additional members

$ mongod --port 27018 --dbpath "C:\Program Files\MongoDB\Server\5.0\data2" --replSet replicaSet1

Make sure the port & dbpath are different for each new node.

Add each new node to the replicaSet from the shell

$ mongo --port 27017
PRIMARY> rs.add("localhost:27018")
Cubical answered 18/2, 2022 at 20:50 Comment(3)
Matt, I'm facing the same problem, and the thing is that even the first node in the replica set cannot be started; therefore, you cannot run the rs.initiate() command (you can, but it will respond that the node is not part of a replica set)Cartercarteret
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "the first node in the replica set cannot be started?" Are you seeing the same error as the OP? The OP's first node is running.Cubical
Yes, I'm (was) seeing the same error. Strictly speaking, the node can be started, but it stops running after a while if the replica set is not initiated.Cartercarteret

I was facing the same problem but was using docker-compose.
Solved:

This is my docker-compose.yaml file:

version: "3"
services:
  mongo1:
    hostname: mongo1
    container_name: localmongo1
    image: mongo
    expose:
      - 27017
    restart: always
    entrypoint: [ "/usr/bin/mongod", "--bind_ip_all", "--replSet", "rs0" ]
  mongo2:
    hostname: mongo2
    container_name: localmongo2
    image: mongo
    expose:
      - 27017
    restart: always
    entrypoint: [ "/usr/bin/mongod", "--bind_ip_all", "--replSet", "rs0" ]
  mongo3:
    hostname: mongo3
    container_name: localmongo3
    image: mongo
    expose:
      - 27017
    restart: always
    entrypoint: [ "/usr/bin/mongod", "--bind_ip_all", "--replSet", "rs0" ]
  mongosetup:
    image: mongo
    depends_on:
      - mongo1
      - mongo2
      - mongo3
    volumes:
      - .:/scripts
    restart: "no"
    entrypoint: [ "bash", "/scripts/mongo_setup.sh"]

And here is the config file for replicaSet initialization (mongo_setup.sh file name):

#!/bin/bash
echo "sleeping for 10 seconds"
sleep 10

echo mongo_setup.sh time now: `date +"%T" `
mongosh --host mongo1:27017 <<EOF

Well, first, I must say that Matt's answer (https://mcmap.net/q/622203/-mongodb-replica-set-cannot-use-non-local-read-concern-until-replica-set-is-finished-initializing) gave some clues about the solution. What was missing there was a better explanation.

Yes, the thing is that the replica server itself must be initiated. The commands starting the MongoDB daemons will continue to show the error until that happens, or will eventually stop (for a timeout).

I want to make clear that this worked for me on Windows. I was following a tutorial where the instructor did the procedure on Linux, and the error didn't appear. I'm going to describe here all the steps to make more clear how to solve the problem.

As it has already been said, the port and the data folder must be different for each node.

  1. On separate command shells run every mongod command (e.g. mongod --replSet cookingSet --dbpath=c:\temp\mongodb\data\rs1 --port 27018) and let them run.
  2. On another command shell, connect to some of the daemons started in the step 1, using the MongoDB shell, like mongosh --port 27018 Note that the port must be specified, and must match one of the ports used for starting the nodes.
  3. On this shell, create a variable like
rsconfig = {
  _id: "cookingSet",
  members: [
      {_id: 0, host: "localhost:27018"},
      {_id: 1, host: "localhost:27019"},
      {_id: 2, host: "localhost:27020"}
  ]
}

where _id must be equal to the value of the parameter 'replSet' used for starting the nodes. In this case, all nodes are running in my localhost. This variable represents the configuration of the replica set.

  1. run the command rs.initiate(rsconfig)

'rsconfig' is the name of the variable created before.

  1. Verify the replica set by running rs.status() You should see the members listed in the result.

  2. Verify the error is not thrown any more. Go to some of the shells where the nodes were started and see that the error is not thrown anymore.

I was facing this issue on windows 10. This happened because the mongodb daemon was running as a service by default. Follow these steps

  • Go to task manager and click on the services tab
  • Find mongodb service
  • right click and select stop

hopefully, this will fix the issue.

this is expected. You would have to open a new terminal while mongod daemon is running in another terminal.

And carry on with the "mongo" command to open the mongo shell.
