How to ignore acute accent in a javascript regex match?

I need to match a word like 'César' for a regex like this /^cesar/i.

Is there an option like /i to configure the regex so it ignores the acute accents?. Or the only solution is to use a regex like this /^césar/i.

Assuming you want to do this for all accents take a look at #228450Balladist
Alex, it seems now to me that this question is a duplicate. I see you didn't mark it so. Why ?Torose
Hum ... why not try replace? name = "César"; alert(name.replace('é', 'e')); ... i not like matchAntibody

The standard ecmascript regex isn't ready for unicode (see http://blog.stevenlevithan.com/archives/javascript-regex-and-unicode).

So you have to use an external regex library. I used this one (with the unicode plugin) in the past : http://xregexp.com/

In your case, you may have to escape the char é as \u00E9 and defining a range englobing e, é, ê, etc.

EDIT : I just saw the comment of Alex : you'll find inside the range for the accented equivalent of e.

Note for readers: As of 2023 JS has support for unicode. If you have to support legacy browsers, use Babel to transpile your code.J

You could remove the accents from the string first and test it separately:

var someString = 'César';
var bare = removeDiacritics(someString);

if (/^cesar/i.test(bare)) {
    // fail
}

See this answer for a definition of removeDiacritics().

Following Ja͢ck's answer, here's an implementation of applyDiacritics so you can actually match the string without needing to remove or replace anything.

Be aware this won't work with lots of regexp's though... Take it as it is:

In general it could by done easily with some help of Lodash library, when you're testing two types of the same regex input - one is deburred by lodash _deburr function other is raw user's input. Example for username input form based filtering (with little help of lodash _filter function):

import _ from 'lodash'

const input = inputFromYourFormInput
const users = ['Jiřina Žlutá', 'Aleš Úzký'];
const regex = new RegExp(input, 'gi');

const filtered = _.filter(users, (u) => {
  const debured = _.deburr(u)
  if (u.name.match(regex) || debured.match(regex))
    return u
})

In this case It doesn't matter if your input is Jirina Zluta or Jiřina Žlutá _filter function will return new filtered array [Jiřina Žlutá]

See this answer: https://mcmap.net/q/20551/-remove-accents-diacritics-in-a-string-in-javascript

You can remove diacritics characters on the string to match:

"Le café au lait, ça tabasse!"
  .normalize("NFD")
  .replace(/[\u0300-\u036f]/g, "")
  .match(/cafe/)

// ['cafe', index: 3, input: 'Le cafe au lait, ca tabasse!', groups: undefined]

Meanwhile, if it the OP's problem still is just about identifying/matching entire words, regardless of acute accent, diacritics etc, a new possible approach could be based on JavaScript's Intl module/API without the help of any regular expression.

The task of a text's word-segmentation can be achieved by the segment method of an Intl.Segmenter instance.

In order to get all the matching words of a word query, one could reduce the resulting segments, where the collecting reducer function would locale compare each segment's word-like token against the query, based on the compare method of an Intl.Collator instance.

function collectMatchingWordItemFromSegment(collector, segment, idx) {
  let { collator, wordQuery, wordCount = 0, result } = collector;

  const { segment: token, isWordLike } = segment;
  if (
    isWordLike &&
    (collator.compare(token, wordQuery) === 0)
  ) {
    ++wordCount;

    const { segment: match, index } = segment;

    result.push({
      match,
      index,
      wordCount,
      tokenCount: (idx + 1),
    });
  }
  return { collator, wordQuery, wordCount, result };
}
const sampleText = `Risus nonummy purus. César. Facilisis potenti
ultricies dis et in sagittis id nonummy Hac cubilia sapien, césar.
Habitant eleifend vulputate tristique phasellus consectetuer, cesar
erat sagittis hendrerit porttitor consectetuer posuere dui mus class
metus nunc litora Cesar.`;
