I have been following the Spring Security Reference and i added only this classes:

@Configuration
@EnableWebMvcSecurity
public class WebSecurityConfig extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

    @Override
    protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
        http
        .authorizeRequests()
            .anyRequest().authenticated()
            .and()
        .formLogin().loginPage("/login")
        .permitAll()
            .and()
        .logout()
        .permitAll();
    }

    @Autowired
    public void configureGlobal(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
        auth
            .inMemoryAuthentication()
                .withUser("user").password("password").roles("USER").and()
                .withUser("user").password("password").roles("USER", "ADMIN");
    }
}

and

public class SecurityInitializer extends AbstractSecurityWebApplicationInitializer {

}

but when i run the server, an exception is thrown, i don't know what i am doing wrong, can you help me please?

This is the stacktrace:

can be that you are missing some getter/setter in one of your beans?Damage
I don't think so, if a delete both classes, everything works fine.Troxell
I suppose that you are using Spring Security 3.2.5 RELEASE because you are referencing the docs accordingly?Sensory
Yes, i am using that version of Spring Security.Troxell
Can you Show the complete stacktrace and the filter definition.?Copybook
Done! The filter definition of the spring security is that both classes.Troxell

I copied your spring security configuration and was able to reproduce the error.

Following line in the stacktrace gives the root cause of the exception:

at org.springframework.security.provisioning.InMemoryUserDetailsManager.createUser(InMemoryUserDetailsManager.java:59)

In InMemoryUserDetailsManager class, createUser() method, Spring checks if the user exists before creating an user. In your case you are adding two user with same username, hence there is an IllegalArgumentException.

I added two users with different usernames and it started working fine.

I had the same problem. I fixed it deleting http.antMatchers("").The problem was "" - SpringSecurityFilterChain throws an error, because pattern could not be empty or null.

With java 11 please add this to pom file

<dependency>
        <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
        <artifactId>jaxb-core</artifactId>
        <version>2.3.0.1</version>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>javax.xml.bind</groupId>
        <artifactId>jaxb-api</artifactId>
        <version>2.3.1</version>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
        <artifactId>jaxb-impl</artifactId>
        <version>2.3.1</version>
    </dependency>

Simply, You can't create 2 users with same user name. But passwords can be same. Just rename the username

Fixed it by changing .antMatchers("/api/", "") to .antMatchers("/api/")

I fixed it by updating my spring-security-config version to the latest one.

works for me only when i changed the version of spring security all to the same:

my spring security was:

<dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.security</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-security-web</artifactId>
            <version>**5.6.3**</version>
        </dependency>
<dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.security</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-security-config</artifactId>
            <version>**5.3.0.RELEASE**</version>
</dependency>

and i changed to:

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.security</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-security-web</artifactId>
            <version>**4.1.1.RELEASE**</version>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.security</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-security-config</artifactId>
            <version>**4.1.1.RELEASE**</version>
        </dependency>

if you are using spring boot 3 must be considered that In Spring Security 5.7.0-M2 the WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter is deprecated. so you must Upgrade the Deprecated WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter with the correct beans.

Below is an example configuration using the WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter that secures all endpoints with HTTP Basic:

@Configuration
public class SecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

    @Override
    protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
        http
            .authorizeHttpRequests((authz) -> authz
                .anyRequest().authenticated()
            )
            .httpBasic(withDefaults());
    }

}

Going forward, the recommended way of doing this is registering a SecurityFilterChain bean:

@Configuration
public class SecurityConfiguration {

    @Bean
    public SecurityFilterChain filterChain(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
        http
            .authorizeHttpRequests((authz) -> authz
                .anyRequest().authenticated()
            )
            .httpBasic(withDefaults());
        return http.build();
    }

}

In my case (having a previously running program yield this error), I merely needed to swap back from Java 11 to Java 8 (after developing a different application). I recommend sdkman in order to ease this process.

if the above Answers does work check the maven version is compatible with your java version

my application runs with java version 1.8 but I had maven with version 3.8.1 which is not compatible hence downgrading the maven version to 3.6.2 solved the above error

I had the same error message and the problem was that I had 2 RequestMappings defined with the same path, and honestly the error message is the least specific thing ever, maybe someone reading this review is running with the same issue right now, so please check that! :)

For java 11 and spring boot 2.7.12, update following dependency in POM.xml

 <dependency>
      <groupId>org.springframework.security</groupId>
      <artifactId>spring-security-web</artifactId>
      <version>5.7.8</version>
    </dependency>

P.S: check with dependency analyzer tool in InteliJ Idea to find out conflicts for spring-security-web . if any exclude them in POM.xml file.
