Mobile Redirect using htaccess

Solved html .htaccess

I have a website called

www.website.org

I have a mobile website called

m.website.org

I want to use an htaccess to automatically redirect the main website URL to the mobile version..

However, there is a link on the mobile version that points back to the main website called

www.website.org?noredirect=true

When I click the logo on the home page of the actual website it links to

www.website.org

I don't want the user to be allowed back to mobile accidentally by clicking on the logo on the main page. How can I accomplish this via htaccess without JavaSCript.

If not I am open-minded to alternate options.

How do you want to determine upfront that they should be redirected to the mobile site/how will you persist the noredirect status across requests if they click back to the main website? – Primitive 10/9, 2010 at 7:36

There needs to be something to check if they are on a mobile phone or not which I have some JavaScript set up already for altering CSS but if they try to leave it will redirect back. – Junina 13/9, 2010 at 15:4

Your last EDIT you using for sensing mobile redirect has some bug in it. It sometimes detects IE8 on W7 as mobile device. I cant reproduce this at the moment, but I will keep you posted as soon as I do more investigation. – Paint 16/7, 2012 at 13:6

I tested bits and pieces of the following, but not the complete rule set in its entirety, so if you run into trouble with it let me know and I'll dig around a bit more. However, assuming I got everything correct, you could try something like the following:

I know this topic is a bit old... but what would I need to change to this in the case of having the logic reversed? This is: mobile site at example.com and the normal site at s.example.com? – Acetone 30/5, 2013 at 11:22

Tim Stone's solution is on the right track, but his initial rewriterule and and his cookie name in the final condition are different, and you can not write and read a cookie in the same request.

I modified Tim Stone's solution even further. This allows the cookie to be in 2 states, 1 for mobile and 0 for full. When the mobile cookie is set to 0 even a mobile browser will go to the full site.

Here is the code:

I added the functionality to be redirected back to the desktop site from m.example.com in case the user does not visit the site with a mobile device. Additionally I added an environment variable to preserve http/https requests:

This seems to work fine except one thing: When I'm on the desktop site with a desktop device and I visit m.example.com/?m=1, I'm redirected to example.com. When I try again, I "stay" at m.example.com. It seems as if the cookie isn't set and/or read correctly the first time.

Maybe there is a better way to determine if the device is a desktop device, I just negated the device detection from above.

And I'm wondering if this way all mobile devices are detected. In Tim Stone's and naunu's code that part is much larger.

It's individually numbering the array elements, which is silly. It's creating the array in 66 separate commands instead of one array initialization, which is slow. It's using a for loop for the array instead of a foreach loop, which is not idiomatic. – Zinciferous 12/3, 2013 at 18:40

It's using stristr to do the search. This command returns the matched text! When all it needs is a yes/no if there is a match, which is ridiculous. (It's not even using stripos! Which would still be bad, but not as bad.) It's then saving the result in a variable and actually checking the length, which is mind boggling stupid, and slow. (Just use the result as a boolean, no need to count the length.) And it's not using preg_match which would compile the search patterns and do them all at once, instead of in a slow loop. – Zinciferous 12/3, 2013 at 18:40
