Failure to call web service over HTTPS

I'm developing a .Net application that communicates with a web service to get some data. The connection between the .Net application and the web service is done over HTTPS. When I call the web service from the .Net application, I get the following stack trace:

    System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. ---> System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

What I tried to do is the following: 1- Importing the certificate to the local keystore (Tried all keystores in certmgr.msc) 2- Developing a small Java test client using Eclipse, and that communicates with the same web service. The Java client has thrown the same exception at first. Then, after importing the same certificate that I used in certmgr.msc to the default cacerts keystore (under $JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\security\cacerts" , using Java's Keytool, the Java client successfully called the web service.

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this? Thanks.

The error message says it all:

The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

You should check the remote certificate. It is probably expired, or issued by some untrusted CA.

If you don't care that the certificate is invalid, you can add the following code somewhere before you establish the SSL connection:

ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = 
  delegate(object s, X509Certificate certificate, 
   X509Chain chain, SslPolicyErrors sslPolicyErrors) { return true; };

As far as I can tell this will turn off ssl verification. This can lead to you be vulnerable to man in the middle ssl spoofing.Jug

You might want to examine the version of TLS/SSL in use by the remote service as well.
