I have a 3-nodes kafka-connect worker cluster in distributed mode, with a running s3 sink connector. To update the configuration of the connector at run-time, I run the command below:

curl -X PUT -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data @s3.json http://localhost:8083/connectors/<connector-name>/config

However, it returns:

{"error_code":500,"message":"Cannot deserialize instance of `java.lang.String` out of START_OBJECT token\n at [Source: (org.glassfish.jersey.message.internal.ReaderInterceptorExecutor$UnCloseableInputStream); line: 1, column: 14] (through reference chain: java.util.LinkedHashMap[\"config\"])"}

The complete log of worker is here:

 [2018-11-19 15:10:47,471] ERROR Uncaught exception in REST call to /connectors/s3-sink-common-log/config (org.apache.kafka.connect.runtime.rest.errors.ConnectExceptionMapper:61)

For background: The worker cluster is on Ubuntu 16.04, with package confluent-kafka-connect-s3=5.0.0-1 and confluent-kafka-2.11=2.0.0-1. The version of apache-kafka is 2.0.0-cp1. The content of s3.json file is correct, as I can delete the current connector and re-create it with the new json file.

Solved. The content of s3.json is wrong for PUT /connectors/(string: name)/config API. If the json file for POST /connectors API is in format as below:

{
  "name": "<connector-name>",
  "config": {
     "<blabla...>",
  }
}

Then the right json file is in format:

{
   "name": "<connector-name>",
   "<blabla...>"
}

Requiring "config" object when creating with POST and then requiring not putting values in "config" with update PUT is error-prone. Thanks for spotting this though.Quiteris
I have a project in OpenShift, I wanted to create kafka connect source connector through postman. How to enable openshift project to connect through postman? Please advise.Sabella

It's a different format for updating a connector (PUT request) than the one used for creating a new connector (POST request). I'm not sure why it's designed that way but if you want to avoid creating a new file you can use it like this:

curl -X PUT -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data "$(cat s3.json | jq -r .config)" http://localhost:8083/connectors/<connector-name>/config
