I'm writing a program that's parsing an XML file to java objects using smooks. I've been asked to run this as a servlet. The application (before being converted to a servlet) worked just fine, but the tomcat server crashes every time I try to run it. Now I've run an example servlet with no problems.

any thoughts?

I rewrote the program to no avail, however the error you were talking about before ("invalid byte tag in constant pool") is gone. this time, there is nothing in my WEB_INF/lib folder.

according to new stacktrace, it means you have not added milyn-smooks-core jar or is not in your classpath. – Dilly

org.apache.tomcat.util.bcel.classfile.ClassFormatException: Invalid byte tag in constant pool: 60

This can have several possible causes which are all related to an incompatible Servlet API version being used during the build.

Most probably you've an offending servletcontainer-specific JAR file like servlet-api.jar or so from an arbitrary servletcontainer of a different make/version in your webapp's /WEB-INF/lib. You should remove it. It doesn't belong there. If you did this in order to "fix" compilation errors on the Servlet API, please read this answer how to do it properly for Eclipse+Tomcat: How do I import the javax.servlet API in my Eclipse project?

Another probable cause is that the Eclipse project is configured using a wrong "Dynamic Web Module" facet version. You need to ensure that this is set to 3.0 (as Tomcat 7.0 is a Servlet 3.0 container). Rightclick project, go to Properties > Project Facets > Dynamic Web Module and ensure that this is set to version 3.0.

Again another possible cause (but this would IMO less likely cause this particular exception) is that the web.xml is by itself declared as per the wrong Servlet API version. Make sure that the <web-app> root declaration complies Servlet 3.0 spec.

Update: if everything seems right, then the cause of the problem is probably in the 3rd party JAR itself (most likely the one of Smooks). You'd like to report it as a bug to its maintainers. In the meanwhile, if you don't have any JARs which require Servlet 3.0 annotation scanning, you can turn off the scanning of annotations in JAR files by adding metadata-complete="true" attribute to the <web-app> entery in web.xml.

There's no servlet-api.jar in the lib folder, and the dmw version is 3.0. However, instead of using a web.xml, i was under the impression that i could use annotations in my servlet instead, so i used that method, should i be using a web.xml file? – Trim
No, without web.xml, a minimum of version 3.0 would be assumed. What JARs exactly do you have all in /WEB-INF/lib? – Taxdeductible

Okay. There's likely means of a serious classpath messup. Have you ever changed Tomcat's own /lib folder? Have you ever changed JDK/JRE's own /lib or /lib/ext? Have you ever manually changed the Eclipse project's Build Path or Deployment Assembly settings? Have you ever dealt with loose servlet-api.jar or javaee.jar files and likes in one of the previous servlet programming attempts? If you can't figure out this all, I can only suggest to trash and reinstall JRK/JRE/Eclipse/Tomcat and don't do things unless you're absolutely clear as to what exactly you're actually doing. – Taxdeductible

Sometimes if you are running a Tomcat server in Eclipse, the local Tomcat working directory can get jacked up and you have to clear it explicitly. Note that this is NOT the same as doing a Clean build on the project: Open Servers window->Right click on the server->Clean Tomcat work Directory...->OK

I was using Tomcat 7.0.27. When migrating my machine to another with Win7-64 bit, I started getting this error when starting Tomcat. As this post (org.apache.tomcat.util.bcel.classfile.ClassFormatException: Invalid byte tag in constant pool: 15 - Tomcat 7, JDK incompatibilty?), I just update the Tomcat to 7.0.61 which solved my problem.
